Rating: PG
Disclaimer: I don't own them
Summary: Things weren't supposed to happen like this...
Warnings: Character death
Notes: Thanks to my muse Saber Shadowkitten. Thanks to Nancy as always for XX and The Odyssey. This is unbetad as it is just a spur of the moment thing. Listening to Jewel and I'm majorly depressed after two of her songs...like always!

Things weren't supposed to happen like this.

He was the hero and heros always got the girl in the end.

Always.

He was supposed to be lying in bed, content. Happy, his heart beating to the rythym of pure bliss. Arms wrapped around a warm body, legs entangled with ones so much browner than his own. Maybe even one of his arms would be numb from having his lovers head use it as a pillow? Who knows...and now, neither of them would have a chance to find out.

Really, things should have gone differently. All those plans he had made. Little things like buying a mirror, tasting garlic for the first time. Big things like taking communion again, using his human name. Taking a walk in the moonlight with his lover not because it was the only choice but because he *had* the choice to do so. To be able to choose between the moonlight and the sunshine.

He couldn't help it. Bitter, the only word he could use for how he felt about the way things had eventuated.

He had felt it. Felt the warmth spread from his toes, creeping slowly up his body till his hair stood upright. Every fibre in his whole being had been shrieking in agony. His long dead cells waking from the slumber they had been subjected to for so long, each one flooded with the searing heat of being human again.

He had done it. Fought the war the scrolls had predicted. Won it as well. Defeated the demon hordes from the realm of Fire and Rain. He had been surrounded by all his friends from the Hellmouth and L.A., all battered and bruised from fighting by his side. All too excited to feel their pain by what was happening in front of them. Each one had stared down at him as he had gasped and writhed on the wet and partially scorched grass, a few murmering soothing words while his lungs filled with air for the first time in 250 years. He had looked wildly at each friend, seeing a mixture of joy and love intertwined with the tears everyone was shedding.

His head had been cradled in his lovers warm lap, his body jerking from the pins and needles running down each limb, eyes scrunched shut as the warm blood had finally reached his heart.

He had achieved his Shanshu and he had never thought to wonder if there was a price to pay for his redemption.

Angel had never thought to ask just how long he would be human.

Two minutes.

An eternity for one who had been dead for so long.

Long enough for him to scream as he had felt his heart beat once and then refuse to do so again. Long enough for him to open his eyes and watch as his lover had shed tears onto his once cool skin.

Two minutes.

Long enough to realise that he had never said *those* words and that he would be dead by the time he got enough breath to be able to whisper them.

Two minutes.

Too short a time to memorise his lovers tear drenched face as the man had realised just what had been happening. Too quick for him to reach a hand up and wipe a tear away from those large chocolate brown eyes.

Two minutes.

Too short for him to offer a word of comfort to those he had been about to leave behind. Too short for him to understand what his lover had been trying to tell him inbetween loud sobs.

He was bitter because he had never thought to ask how long.

If he had known then he would never have broken an already shattered heart, one that had been mended so haphazardly, it was a wonder all pieces had been put together so many times before.

If he had known, he would never have worked so hard to break down the barriers between them, never have torn down the walls on a relationship that was still being re-drawn as a tentative friendship grew into something more.

He was a hero and he was supposed to get his girl...in this case, his guy but somewhere, somehow things stuffed up and he was bitter.

He was bitter because life was a bitch and fate always had it in for you. And sometimes, the hero failed to get the girl, he had never thought that it would be him though.

If only he had known just how long, then he would have never smiled for the first time at one of Xander's jokes.

The end.

Title: Into Denial
Author: Jessica
E-mail: poizonivey@excite.com

Pairing: S/X
Summary: Xander sinks further and further into denial.
Rating: PG-13…nothing worse than what you would see on the show, I don’t think anyway.
Spoilers: Extremely major ones for Into the Woods
Disclaimer: I think we all know these guys belong to Joss and his people. Cause believe you me, if they were my property, we’d be seeing a wet and naked Spike and Xander doing nummy things to each other’s bodies every Tuesday night.
Distribution: My sites, list archives, Spike and Xander’s World of Fun, and if anyone else wants it, drop me a line. I like to see my work on sites. I’m egotistical like that. *g* j/k
Feedback: I think one word sums it up: “Duh”.
Notes: This just popped into my head. Here’s what I think was really going on during Into the Woods. And thanks to Psyche’s Transcripts for the, uh, well, transcripts. *g*
Dedication: To my chica Ally, my beta bitch, and just my bestest bitch in general. ;)

Xander was wandering around Sunnydale. He needed to clear his head. Luckily it was daytime and, for once, he was in no danger.

Ever since watching Buffy fly off the handle like that back at the empty nest of vamps, he’d been wondering why. Why was she freaking out over this?

They all had much more important things on their minds. Especially Buffy. Defeating Glory, taking care of her mom. He thought that she would be worrying about those things, not some people who were willingly offering up a vein to some hungry vamps. Granted, it was disgusting, but there were other things that should take precedence. There were definitely more important things on Xander’s mind, like that bleached vamp that had taken up permanent residence in his thoughts.

Xander shuddered at that thought. He was dirty, disgusting, wrong for having lusty thoughts about the Chipped Wonder. Evilness and vampiness aside, Spike was a guy. And Xander had spent pretty much his whole life telling himself that he didn’t like guys. He liked girls. Girls, with their girly ways and girly parts and lack of anything manly about them. That’s right. He liked girls.

Xander cut that train of thought before he got himself in trouble. Denial was a wonderful place to dwell. He should know, he’d been dwelling there for an awfully long time.

He stopped for a moment and looked at his surroundings. He was in front of one of Sunnydale’s many cemetaries. It wasn’t just any cemtary either, it was the cemetary that held Spike’s crypt. Xander sighed to himself and threw his hands in the air. How the hell did he end up here? He wished his subconscious would stop sending out these signals to him.

A movement out of the corner of his eye broke Xander out of his thoughts. He turned around and spotted Riley walking quickly and purposely through the cemetary. He seemed to be going towards Spike’s crypt. Intrigued as to why Riley would be going there of all places, Xander followed him.

He saw Riley enter the vampire’s crypt. Xander took a spot right near a window that was thankfully only covered by a curtain to block out the sun, allowing him to hear what was going on inside. There was a little space where he could see into the crypt as well.

He peeked inside and saw Riley grab Spike by his shirt and haul him out of the chair.

“Hey! Hey, let’s be reasonable about this” said Spike.

Riley’s only response was to slam Spike against a pillar. Xander winced in sympathy for the vamp.

”You may have noticed, Spike,” Riley said while punching Spike in the face, “I left reasonable about three exits back.”

Spike tried to reason with the younger man. “Look, I’m not the one who got you into this. Don’t kill the messenger.”

Xander was confused. He had no idea what the two men were talking about. Fear flooded his system when he saw the anger and hatred on Riley’s face. His heart skipped a beat when Riley pulled out a stake. Riley was going to kill Spike. Xander couldn’t breathe. He had to stop him. He couldn’t let Riley kill Spike. He knew he had to do something, but he was frozen in shock. He wanted to go in there and grab the stake and kick the living shit out of Commando Boy in there. But, all he could do was stand there and watch as Riley plunged the stake into Spike’s chest and smugly said, “Why the hell not?”

Icy cold hands of anguish gripped Xander’s heart. He opened his mouth to scream, but abruptly stopped when he noticed that Spike was still standing there instead of being a pile of ashes. What the hell was going on? Why hadn’t spike been dusted? He felt like he was going to pass out. His brain was on overload. He distantly heard Spike howling in pain.

“Ow! Bloody hell! Oh god!” Spike screamed in anguish. All of a sudden, he got quieter. “Hey”

Xander came back to himself in time to hear Riley say, “Plastic wood grain. Looks real doesn’t it? Don’t think I don’t know what’s going on with you Spike. Stay away from her. Or we do this for real next time”

Her? Her who? Xander thought to himself. Who the hell were they talking about.

Spike laughs. “Oh man. You are really under it, aren’t you?”

“What?” Riley demanded angrily.

“Look at you. All afraid I’m hot for your honey.”

Riley walked back over to Spike. “Because you are”, he said.

“Well…yeah” Spike admitted. “But that’s not your problem. Even if…”

And that’s all that Xander heard.

He stumbled away from his place at the window and staggered out of the cemetary. He couldn’t breathe, he couldn’t see straight, his stomach was in knots. He dropped to his knees by a tree and threw up. Tears were pouring down his face. One thing kept running on repeat in his mind. Spike loves Buffy.

He felt like his heart was breaking in two, but that couldn’t be what it was. He didn’t love Spike, so why should that bother him? Hell, he didn’t even *like* Spike. He wasn’t gay, he didn’t have any feelings for the bleached vamp, so why did he care? It must be disgust, Xander thought to himself. Disgust that something as evil and disgusting as Spike could have feelings for Buffy. That’s what it was. He was disgusted, and he felt bad for his friend.

Xander kept telling himself over and over and that this was the reason he felt the way he did. Deep down inside though, he knew this wasn’t true. But yet again, Xander denied these feelings and continued to lie to himself.

He stood up and wiped his mouth and his tear streaked face. He took a deep breath and decided to go to the magic shop.

And on his way there, a lone tear slipped unnoticed down Xander’s face.

~*~*~*~

Xander opened the door to the magic shop and walked in. Nobody was in the front except for Anya, who was looking through some paperwork behind the counter. He walked over to her and stood on the other side of the counter. He turned towards the back room, where he could hear Buffy grunting and the sounds of her punching what he assumes to be the punching bag.

“How long has she been in there?” he inquired.

“A while now,” replied Anya. “Seems pretty gung-ho about it too. Didn't even stop to say hello.”

Xander nodded his head. “Yeah, when we went to deal with that vampire nest, she got all Rambo and torched the place. Something seriously bad is going on with her.”

“Oh, I don't know, maybe you're overreacting. I mean, who hasn't done stuff like that from time to time? I mean, I made this one guy spontaneously combust, and he set his whole village on fire.”

While Anya was talking, the bell on the door jingled and Riley entered the store.

Xander looked at Anya. “Can you stop being scary for a minute and listen to what I'm trying to tell you?”

He just didn’t understand her. Sometimes he didn’t even know why he was with her. She didn’t know how to function in human society, and that just got to him. She embarasses him all the time, and she doesn’t seem to really care about anyone but herself. He turned around as he heard Riley approach and looked at him.

Xander was torn. He didn’t know how to act after what he heard and saw at Spike’s crypt. He didn’t know whether he wanted to punch the commando, throw up on his shoes, or congratulate him for beating up on Spike and scaring the hell out of the neutered vamp. He should do the latter though, because he hated the vamp. He should be happy that Spike was in pain, physically and emotionally. He deserved after making Xander feel the way he did.

Instead he did nothing, because Riley cocked his head toward the training room and asked, “She in there?”

“She’s training,” Xander replied.

Riley nodded. “Would you guys mind clearing out? I need a minute alone with her.”

Xander looked at Riley and nodded. He turned away to get his jacket as tears started to form in his eyes. He willed them away as he pulled the jacket on. All of a sudden he heard Anya talking to Riley.

“A little after-hours hanky-panky in the training room, huh?” She said as she walked out from behind the counter. “Boy, Xander and I could tell you some stories...”

“Not now. Let's go, Anya.” Xander said to her. The two of them start walking towards the door as Riley headed towrds the back.

Anya continued talking, calling to Riley over her shoulder. “There's a funny thing with the vaulting horse that you can tr...”

“Anya!!” Xander screamed, cutting her off.

“What?” she asked. “He started it.”

“In your world, maybe, but where the people are, this isn't the time for 'Tales of Anya and Xander's Sexcapades.'” Xander said.

“Oh. Uh, well, maybe we can go home and, you know, have 'em.” She replied, stopping and turning towards her boyfriend.

“Actually, I've got some stuff to take care of.” Xander walked past her and out of the store.

~*~*~*~

Xander walked up to Spike’s crypt and peeked into the same window he had been looking through earlier that day. He didn’t really know why he was here, he just knew that he had to see Spike. To see how he was. And for once, he didn’t question his motives, he just went with it.

Spike was sitting there with his shirt off, putting a fresh bandage on the wound over his heart. It was still open and bleeding a little. Not even vampire healing could close a wound like that quickly. Spike winced as he applied tape to the gauze to hold it in place. When he was done, he just lit a cigarette and turned towards the television. Xander could tell he wasn’t really even paying attention to what was on.

Xander had never seen the vamp look the way he did now. He was broken. Spike hadn’t even looked this heartbroken when he came back to Sunnydale their senior year when Drusilla had left him. And he had looked pretty pathetic then. But this, this wasn’t pathetic. This was heart wrenching. Xander turned away with tears running down his cheeks for the billionth time that day.

It didn’t matter anyway. It didn’t matter that Spike loved Buffy and not him. Xander wasn’t gay, he didn’t have feelings for Spike, and that’s what mattered. That Spike was just a blip on the radar. Nothing more. None of this mattered.

He walked out of the cemetary with his head down and his heart in two.

~*~*~*~

Xander let himself into Anya’s apartment with the key she had given him. He walked into her bedroom and saw her in a nightgown sitting on her bed. When she heard him enter the room, she looked up.

Xander looked at her. “I've gotta say something” he said. “'Cause ... I don't think I've made it clear.”

Anya stood up as Xander walked towards her. He had to say this. If he told her all this, then everything would be ok again.

“I'm in love with you,” he said, walking closer to her. She started making her way towards him as well.

He continued. “Powerfully, painfully in love. The things you do ... the way you think ... the way you move ... I get excited every time I'm about to see you.”

Anya stared up at him with a small smile on her lips and tears in her eyes. As Xander stared down at her, he hoped he was making the right decision by saying all this to her.

“You make me feel like I've never felt before in my life. Like a man.”

That’s right, Xander thought to himself. A man. A manly man that falls in love with girls and not guys. Men don’t like other men, they like girls. So if he tells Anya he’s in love with her, he’s a man. Not something he doesn’t wanna be. He’s not the person he’s been denying he was for most of his life.

“I just thought you might wanna know,” he said simply.

Anya moved up to him and he kissed her, praying that he did the right thing and didn’t make things worse.

The End
very interesting, huh? :D
