@deni: die rede von schorsch konntest du vergessen. und dafür bin ich nun solange aufgeblieben. ging nicht sehr lange, höchstens zwanzig min, und er hat halt saddam und seinen söhnen ein ultimatum von 48 stunden gegeben, das land zu verlassen, ansonsten wird es militärische angriffe geben.

dann hat er halt wieder sein typisches gelaber von sich gegeben, das der irak nicht abgerüstet hätte, nicht zusammengearbeitet hätte, und das sie ein starkes land sind, das sich nicht zu fürchten braucht vor seinen feinden, weil es ja vereint ist und mit gottes hilfe wird es schon werden.

Sowas kann man doch eigentlich net durchgehen lassen, wenn der Sicherheitsrat keine Zustimmung zum Angriff gegeben hat, oder?

und clinton hatte schon 2 amstszeiten und mehr darf man in den usa garnich haben al gore der ehemalige stellverteter vom clinton stand ja zur wahl aber der is nich präsident geworden obwohl er mehr stimmen hatte weil die ein etwas undurchschaubares system haben

Troops poised to attack Iraq


The US says it has broad backing for its action
United States-led coalition forces in the Gulf are taking up battle positions for an invasion of Iraq amid reports that military action could be imminent.
White House officials are refusing to say whether they will keep to President Bush's 48-hour deadline for Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein to leave the country, which expires at 0100 GMT on Thursday.

With about 150,000 US and British combat troops poised to attack the country, the Iraqi parliament began an emergency session on Wednesday with defiant chants of support for Saddam Hussein.

As the deployment accelerated, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair won key parliamentary support for the military campaign, despite a major rebellion within his own Labour Party.

White House officials say Mr Bush's language in issuing a deadline to the Iraqi president deliberately left open the option of military action before the deadline.

The Iraqi leadership has rejected out of hand the US demands that Saddam Hussein and his sons go into exile, so the US might not feel any constraint on its actions, says the BBC's Justin Webb in Washington.




US aims for swift war
Pentagon officials have indicated that hostilities will begin with an intense air campaign. This could be followed very quickly by troops on the ground, according to the US army's vice-chief of staff, General John Keane.

British and American troops in tanks, armoured vehicles and trucks have been snaking across the Kuwaiti desert towards the Iraqi border.

The BBC's Gavin Hewitt, who is travelling with the 3rd Infantry Division of the US army, says it took one convoy of marines several hours to pass by.

The soldiers have been told, he says, to spare soldiers of the regular Iraqi army if possible, but also to expect hard battles, possibly involving weapons of mass destruction.

Everyone has been ordered to wear full protective chemical clothing when they cross the border.

But final preparations are being complicated by a fierce sandstorm which has cut visibility in some areas to a few metres.

France, one of the staunchest opponents of conflict, says that if Iraq uses weapons of mass destruction it may consider assisting the war effort

Western intelligence sources say they remain convinced that the Iraqis have chemical and biological weapons and may decide to use them against invading forces.

But this has been discounted by the chief UN weapons inspector, Hans Blix, who said he doubted Iraq would use them even as a last resort because it would turn world opinion in favour of the US.

Humanitarian crisis

Mr Blix is due to deliver a report to the UN Security Council later on Wednesday (about 1530 GMT), listing the key disarmament tasks Iraq has yet to fulfil.

But, with disarmament issues now overtaken by events, correspondents say this is now an academic exercise.

Security Council members, deeply divided over military action, are likely to turn their attention to the humanitarian role of the UN during and after any conflict.

Deep divisions surfaced in parliament in London on Tuesday where, amid dramatic scenes, Mr Blair won backing for the use of UK forces in Iraq by a large majority - 412 to 149.

But the vote also delivered the greatest parliamentary revolt of Mr Blair's premiership, with 139 of his party colleagues voting for an amendment saying the case for war was not yet proven.

Baghdad defiance

At an emergency session of the Iraqi parliament, the speaker Saadoun Hammadi rejected the US war ultimatum delivered to Saddam Hussein.

"We reject and denounce it, and we are all standing together behind our leader, and we're ready to defend our land," Mr Hammadi said, as several MPs chanted their support for Saddam Hussein.

His comments echoed defiant statements from the Iraqi president, who appeared on television to ready the country for its "last battle" against the US.

Iraqi people have meanwhile been making final preparations for war, hurrying to buy extra supplies of food and fuel.

The BBC's Paul Wood, reporting from the Iraqi capital, says Wednesday will probably be the last full day of peace and the people of Baghdad fully expect to spend the coming days and nights in the air raid shelters.
