Pairings that Don't Mix - James Walkswithwind

I've been known to write strange pairings in my time. Possibly as recently as yesterday. Pairings which even the slashiest pair of slash-coloured-glasses would tell you "these two aren't doing it, yo".
In my defense, my strangest pairing has spent lots of on-screen time together.

On the other hand, what's up with writing slash about two people that have never met? Canonically, never ever uttered so much as a 'hey' in passing because they've never even been in the same place at the same time. The easy answer is - because they'd look yummy together. The second most easy answer is - because it would be fun to see them interact (er, with clothes on.) But given those two answers, any and all pairings can be justified by somebody.

So why am I thinking about why would Spike and Wesley ever want to have sex? Other than - D'uh, they're cute, and would provide some great angst. Why ask for more?

Well, because I like fanfiction that is consistent with canon. That is - nothing which happens in the set-up of the story, contradicts the canon. As the story progresses, AUness is fine. But I like to be taken by the hand and led away from the show, rather than dropped in the middle of the field and told to find my way.

So how is Spike/Wesley canonical?

Well, there is good reason to think Wesley knows all about Spike. Not just in the 'I've studied Angelus, and therefore I know about William' sense, but in the 'and I read everything I could on Spike and Drusilla' sense. Spike may or may not know much about Wesley, but he's been to L.A. and knows what Angel is up to. While it's reasonable to think that by the time Wesley showed up in L.A., Spike was distracted with other things (The Initiative, Buffy), it's not unreasonable to think that he knows who Wesley is.

So - they know each other exist. As anyone who's been in high school will tell you, this is a necessary first step to dating. But why would either of them want to schlep the other?

The first answer that springs to mind is Angel/us. It's a simple matter to posit that both Spike and Wesley would like to schlep (or be schlepped by) Angel. It's a second simple matter to posit that for whatever reason they can't -- so they encounter each other somehow and, recognising each other and each other's desires, they turn to each other. This method only mildly diverges from canon.

The second answer has nothing to do with Angel, and everything to do with basic physical attraction. Perhaps while Wesley is traveling around being a Rogue Demon Hunter, he meets Spike. This second answer may or may not involve their recognising each other (or perhaps only one knowing who the other is). Two men, at loose ends, shagging because of basic lust. Again, a reasonable and believable method of pairing them up because - hey, guys are like that.

Both these first two require a bit of coincidence that gets the two in the same place at the same time. But a third reason that comes to mind would be one using the other. To get something - anything - one seeks out the other and begins or accepts a relatonship as a side-note to getting the original goal accomplished. Revenge on Angel, to get an answer, to get cooperation. The two travel near each other's social circles, and it is likely that one could find out where the other is and that he would be useful in some way. The usee's reason for being used could be as simple as loneliness, lust, willingness to be tricked for higher purposes (he secretly knows he's being used, and approves of the goal).

After that, we start to drift farther afield into AU territory. Background and set-up have to be more carefully plotted, to explain why and how. Did Spike run into a young Wesley before Wes ever went to the US? Was Spike Wesley's controlled circumstances vampire -- and Wes realised that admitting to this ex-Watcher in California that saying "I've slept with one" would be a bad idea, so he has to cover for his slip of the tongue by pretending he encountered a vampire at the Watcher's Academy as a controlled exercise in slayage?

Did Wesley go after Spike intentionally, during that year away as Rogue Demon Hunter and shack up with him for several months, creating domestic bliss before Wes had to shower for a week and head for L.A.? What if Wesley ran away after Angel tried to kill him, and met up with Spike, and they got drunk together and plotted Angel's demise and Wesley told Spike how to get a soul so he could be the souled vampire of prophecy?

OK, I'm gonna stop myself before I create more plot bunnies. But at this level, we're still working with canon as the jumping off point. The writer says 'ok, at this point, I'm inserting this what if scenario'. All you really need are moments in canon when one or the other is not shown to be actively not schlepping the other (or explain why no one notices or remarks, if they are). It's still fairly easy, and it allows for an exploration of two fascinating personalities without the over-shadowing personalities of Angel and Buffy to distract them.

At the tail end, of course, we have AUs which are varying degrees of way-out-there. At some point the story doesn't require canonical evidence, and I'm ignoring those because in order to write those you don't really need to read an essay like this to justify it. But the inner edge of way-out-there AUs might still be a concern. And it all comes down to this:

Why would Spike and Wesley turn to one another, given a set-up that puts them in the same room at the same time?

I think the two characters have a lot in common. In current season, they both tend to stand back and observe, jumping in when needed but not really sticking around otherwise. They are both very intelligent, and book-read, and come from similar societies. (It's even reasonable to think they grew up in the same class, only a century removed from each other.) They both suffer beautifully, and both seem to give to those they care for without getting, or expecting, much in return. They both want what's best for those they care about -- and are willing to do whatever is necessary to accomplish it. I might even go so far as to say they both have similarly slippery morals -- the greater good justifies whatever means will most efficiently accomplish it. In previous seasons, or pre-California Wesley, Wesley seems to be a lot like what William once was. Whether or not Spike wants to remember that person, he would recognise him and perhaps choose to toy with something that annoys him, or try to recapture something he's lost.

They might, in either event, be too similar to realistically last long together (if realism is a concern). But for a one night stand, or the regular fuck-buddy and drinking-buddy, I think they'd be well-suited to hang out and be with someone who understands.

And they'd look great together.

Title: Problem Childe
Author: Darlean
Email: crystalrose825@aol.com
Spoiler: None.
Warnings: Written in half an hour after reading a quote and being bitten by a plot bunny. *holds up bandaged finger* There's no point, it's just a little thing to help me through my block.
Disclaimer: Joss's, not mine. The quote's not mine either. Tis Jack Handy's.
Summary: Too short for one. It's silly, pointless, and based on a quote at the end of the ficlet.
Pairings: Not really S/X, but if there was a whole fic it would be.
Rating: PG, for a couple bad words.

"Oh my god! Spike, put that down!"

"Mine!"

"Come here!"

"Hehe!"

"Xander, grab him! Quick!"

"I can't, he's too fast! Buffy!"

"What? Spike! Give me that!"

"Nyah-nyah! Can't catch me!"

"Willow, do a spell! Make him stop!"

"I don't know any spells for this!"

"Spike, I swear if you don't drop that this instant you are GROUNDED!"

"That's not gonna work, Buffy!"

"It works with Dawn!"

"Stop talking and grab him!!"

"Oh god, he's gonna trip!"

"Spike!"

"Haha, fooled you!"

"You little bastard!"

"Xander, don't swear at Spike!"

"He deserves it! When is this damn thing going to wear off?!"

"I don't know! Tara and Giles are still looking for the cure."

"Spike, sweetie, come here. Aunt Buffy's got a nice present for you."

"Bastard!"

"Xander, look what you did!"

"Yeah, blame it all on me!"

"Willow, you go that way and I'll come around here! Hurry!"

"Ahh!"

"Gotcha, you little brat! Gimme that!"

"Don't hurt him, Buffy. It's not his fault."

"Yeah, who left the stake out in the first place? Hmm?"

"Shut up, Xander."

"Trying to dust our poor baby."

"Shut up, Xander!"

"Poor little guy's gonna grow up with a complex now. I'm telling Angel."

"Shut UP, Xander!"

End.

One thing vampire children have to be taught early on is, don't run with a wooden stake. - Jack Handy
