This month my article on Spike will be not on the character of Spike, but of the actor who plays him. James Marsters is in the process of pissing off alot of his fans, and he's making a mistake.
As most of you know, James Marsters has a band, Ghost of the Robot. James has fallen into the same thinking of many an actor, that just because you can act, you can be a singer. He performs regularly at 14 Below in California. Because of his great popularity as Spike on Buffy, every time he plays, the club sells out. James now thinks he's a rock star. When the group was just starting out, he'd come out with his band and sign autographs after his shows. As his shows started getting more popular, he started refusing to come out to sign autographs. Some of these fans had flown from the United Kingdom to come all the way out to California to watch him perform. Fine, he doesn't want to overshadow the other members of the group and cause trouble.
This past year James has signed on to do convention after convention. In the last few days, he's cancelled 2 of these conventions (FedCon and Toronto Trek) he agreed to headline at. His reason, an unforseeable conflict. This unforseeable conflict is he wants to be rock star boy and go on tour with his band. Unforseeable is a family member dying. Unforseeable is not wanting to go play rock star...where you can easily rearrange tour dates around your prior commitments.
Everyone who has paid to not only get their tickets but have also started making arrangements for travel and hotel, will now have to attend these conventions without the star they wanted to see, or basically throw away their money and not attend.
Even this would be understandable if he was any good. But let's face it, GOTR is only selling out shows because it's James Marsters heading the group. It isn't for vocal talent. The band can play...but not a one of them, including James Marsters, can carry a tune. In the webcast they did from 14 Below last year, he spent more time warbling between keys than sticking to one.
What are these big tour dates?? Playing at Knitting Factory. Yes, well worth blowing off $10,000 to get $500.
Buffy is going to end at the end of this season. There is NO guarantee that James will be able to go on to a "Tom Cruise"-like acting career. I don't see him as a leading actor. Maybe a supporting character, but not star of a film. He's going to beat this rock band thing until no one comes to his shows anymore. In a few years time, he will be more than happy that anyone asks him to be a guest at a convention. But, if he keeps this cancelling prior engagements thing going and becomes known as a no-show, the con invitations won't be there...and it will be all his own fault.
Wise up James!!
