Um die ganze Sache hier mal wieder ein bischen voranzutreiben, folgen nun erste Berichte von der Vulkon Con:

Berengaria vom F4F
I was at the banquet at the Tampa Vulcan convention on Saturday night.

I was very interested in the person who was sitting on James Marsters left-hand side...Why? because it was me! I got an invitation to be at his table by winning it at the auction earlier in the day.

What can I tell you about it?

Did you think he was charming, intelligent, well read, opinionated, serious, silly, fun and generous...you were right!

He did most of the talking, giving everyone at our end of the table plenty of opportunity to ask questions and interact with him. He said he was not at all upset that he didn't get an Emmy nomination. He said many people have commented to him that he gets more publicity from NOT being nominated. He was unhappily amazed that "Once More With Feeling"- the Buffy musical episode hadn't been nominated. He thought it was as good as tv can get and he is very proud of it. He calls it his "favorite episode".

He said he loved "The Honeymooners" with Jackie Gleason & Art Carney and had always though tv could never do better than that. But when he watched "Once More with Feeling" he thought"This is it! We have done better". He also said when he has actor friends deride him for being on "Buffy,The Vampire Slayer" he brings them over and makes them watch this episode and they always get very impressed and become regular fans of the show after. He talked about liking the original Star Trek, especially theMr. Spock character. He said he had heard that at times Leonard Nimoy had resented being known primarily as that character. James felt actors who feel like that about it are wrong to do so. (I think he was trying to share that he felt proud to be identified with the role of "Spike"...though,of course,he has many, many different roles still to create). Later,a fan came up to the table to show him 2 Pez dispensers she had made. One was a "Spike" figure and one was a "Mr. Spock" figure. James praised her work and seemed to like them. She said he could have one. He chose the Mr.Spock one. She then asked him to pose for a picture next to the "Spike" one and ,as he did,he sucked in his cheeks and transformed into a "Spike" face that just matched the little Pez dispenser. It was kind of funny. Then the table that had "Clem" James Leary sitting at it erupted in song. Specifically they screamed out the song from Gilligan's Island. That got a big laugh (bigger from James than anyone),then the table with Robin Atkins Downes stood up and responded with "The theme from the Brady Bunch". Our table went next but I don't remember what we sang because we were so bad and were giggling so much. As the other two tables continued their "battle of the tv show tunes" James said that this was the highlight of all the conventions he'd been to in the last year! We tried to think of another song to do but were coming up empty. James said we should all stand up and announce we were going to sing "Silent Night"...and then just be silent. But we didn't do it.
One of the girls at our table had postcards she had made for people to send in to Angel advocating for "Spike". Some of them were funny (Buffy saying"I'll get Spikey to do it,I can make him do anything!"...James said "Spikey...heh heh) and some were touching (Spike deserves more than a ghost of a chance...James said "Awww...when he saw that one. ).
He talked about facing your fears and embracing things that frighten you. He said "Security is an illusion and those that live lives seeking only security are fooling themselves. He said it isn't important to be happy,it is important to make yourself strong enough to survive the rough times in everyone's lives that come.
He talked about being in Europe this summer. He had really liked the food in Germany but one time he was served something he wasn't used to and couldn't make himself eat(I think it was some form of intestines)...I told him about a corn and cuttlefish pizza I had once had in Japan. He said GOTR was thinking about touring Japan next year...or maybe back to England. Someone asked James if he would consider himself an extrovert. He said he was kind of half and half. That private, alone time was very important and necessary to him but that when he was out in public he found it easy to talk to people...like he was doing with all of us. Finally, the evening drew to a close and James was being whisked off to a different hotel...at a secret location. He excused himself, gave us that devastating smile one more time and left behind a tablefull of women with a dreamy look in their eyes,a blissful smile on their lips, and a life-time membership in the "James Marsters fan for Life" club clutched in their hot little hands
James Leary showed up in the back of the room during James Marsters Q&A session. Leary teased him about getting "Clem" a part on "Angel". James said he would love for Clem to be on Angel and that he talks to people about how great James Leary is more than his agent! Leary says "Get me on Angel, and I'll give you 10 per cent! We can but keep our fingers crossed that it could happen someday. You can see how much they enjoy goofing around together.
Samstag Q&A von darhhshad von BAPS

Random notes from James's Q&A. I'm not going to be pretty with this
because I don't want to impose on someone else's connect charges.

James said:

He was not comfortable with the nudity. It's different when it's the
theater and you can choose to take a project or not. With TV you are
contracted 24/7. He also again talked about how Sarah didn't have to
take anything off.

He'd do a Harry Dresden film in a heartbeat. A lot depends on the
funding. If there's a lot of money backing it as a big production,
he wouldn't have a chance. If it's medium money, then he would.

Everyone dies at the end of his film in September but death is worth
it if you can be yourself. "The price is worth paying to be
yourself."

Love scenes are like stunt work. It takes a lot of work to make them
not boring. He liked working with JL because she was able to access
a part of Spike no one else could.

Regency Films is distributing his new movie. This is a good thing
because it means a wide distributorship.

Spike and Angel would fight over Buffy. He sees Spike as immature
(don't quote me on that one, but that's what my notes say.)

The musical is his favorite episode. "made me look glorious."

He's not aware of the facial expressions he makes as Spike because
he's in the moment. He's in his sandlot as an actor.

Television offers security. Theatre doesn't pay enough, and
sometimes movies don't pay at all. A former girlfriend of his found
this out.

Security is a big illusion. You succeed in life by becoming strong.

He produced 70 plays and feels back in that seat with his music.

In 10 years he'd like to have collected the chits to pick his own
projects and become a producer. Macbeth is still the dream project,
he doesn't think anyone has done it well. He'd also like to do a TV
show with two cops -- one black and one white where they explored
their issues.

He liked Spike as a Bad Ass. But that gets repetitive. The character
has had a chance to evolve,. It said more about the character after
he lost his cool.

OK. The next two statements were interesting.
"I think Buffy truly loves Angel."
"I think she (Buffy) used him (Spike) horribly."

He thinks that once he moves to Angel, he will miss the crew. They
really worked hard with a minimum amount of whining.

Eliza is hotter in person. She was totally one of the guys ---
except she was girl. She had a lot of humility.

He would choose Han Solo in an instant over Luke Skywalker, who he
couldn't understand as a hero. He also liked the Fett.

He has a new appreciation for bands who travel on the road.

He's a sleepaholic who likes to put in 12-14 hours but will get by
with catnaps.

Spike learned a lot. He was going through a journey.

Yes. Someone asked about Seeing Red. Grrrr! For the first time,
however, he put the majority of the blame for how the scene turned
out on the producers instead of himself. He said it almost destroyed
his friendship with Sarah and that the producers treated it just
like another scene instead of giving them more direction on what
they (especially him)

"Chance" was a great beginning for Amber. He said her victory was in
getting the movie made, not in getting it distributed. It was a film
that the script promised, and he's expecting great things from her
in the future.

That's about it. Oh, somewhere in there we got the kicking
ass/kissing babes line. Hee!

There's another Q&A tomorrow. If I can get him to call on me, I'll
try to ask a Redemption question. I am considering waving a Spike
thong to achieve this aim.

It took four hours for me to get through the through the autograph
line. I gave him the prezzies. He was tired but still a trouper. He
was wearing a burgundy shirt for those who need to know. Teep sat
at his table for the dinner and can give a report on what he had to
eat. Just kidding!

And this, from catlady on F4F.....

In the autograph line, I told James that I hoped he realizes that the reason many women love Spike is because we identify with him more than with Buffy. We identify with the way he loves with all of his heart and wears his heart on his sleeve. He added "and he gets used and gets his heart broken." He seemed to know exactly what I meant. He said "believe me that happens to both sexes. My life is proof of that."
2. James Q&A ebenfalls von catlady
James talked about screaming in pain when he bleaches his hair. Someone suggested that he rinse his hair in milk. He thanked her for the suggestion and said that he will be bleaching his hair again in 3 days and would try milk to see if it helps.

I asked him about Buffy using Spike as a punching bag when she was depressed and frustrated. I said that it seemed that the show was sending a message that her actions were OK since she never showed any remorse. He didn't think that her abuse of Spike was shown as being acceptable. I told him that she never showed any remorse and that make it look like it was OK. He said that he knew that the writers did not think that her abuse was acceptable and they did not intend to send that message. He said they were trying to show that she was human and that humans make mistakes. He said that he was sorry that it came across that her violence was OK.

James also said that he is taking 7 weeks off to film "Italian Heat." He is filming his AtS scenes before he leaves because he will be in every episode. James said that his AtS commitments come first but that Joss was very excited about him having the opportunity to work with Derek Jacobi so he was very willing to made the adjustments to the schedule.
Last but not least chase820 von MTS
I've read so many great con reports lurking here, I'm glad to finally be able to at least partially return the favor.

I'm hella tired after five hours of driving, but I'll post a few preliminary tidbits tonite.

--James admitted at yesterday's Q&A that Buffy "used Spike terribly."

--He outed himself about his family situation at today's Q&A. Someone asked if the rumor online that he's going to be Sirius Black in the next HP film is true, he said no, but that he'd love to play the part. The lady then asked if he's familiar with the books, and James came right out and said he had a seven-year-old son, so he definitely knows HP. There was a follow-up question about what his son thinks of him on BtVS, and James said he wouldn't show his son the series, as he doesn't think his son needs to see Daddy in that light (killing people and shagging babes, I s'pose is what he meant). He said he and his son have a very normal relationship, one which revolves around Dragonball Z and some other anime thing I didn't quite catch the name of. James went on to say that his son gets upset when they're together and someone asks him to sign an autograph, so he doesn't do it when the lad is around. He explained that Hollywood is such a plastic culture that he doesn't like to expose his son to it, and that's why he doesn't talk about him much. Good for James for finally realizing that his female fan base could care less that he's forty (which he also admitted again at the Q&A), divorced, and has a child. I mean honestly, it's not like those are deep, dark sins, now are they?

--Another fan asked which Tennessee Williams character he'd most like to play, and he said Brick from Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, because he's never been able to figure out Brick's motivations, so he'd like to have the chance to do that. Stanley from Streetcar named Desire would also be great, but since Marlon Brando left his fingerprints all over the part, it's hard for any actor to shout "Stella!" without invoking MB. Said that was actually a flaw in the picture, since Stanley Kowalski is supposed to come across as nothing more than an animal, but Brando was so charismatic that you sympathized with him.

--I (squee!) got to ask him a question, and I wanted to know where he'd like to be in ten years. He said he'd like to have the chance to produce his own projects, esp. the oft-mentioned Macbeth, which he's never seen done correctly. That Macbeth should be about the main character's conscious choice to do evil, but most of the time the evil in the story is foisted off on the witches or Lady Macbeth. Said he'd also be interested in doing a cop show with a black cop and a white cop who hate each other and are forced to work together, and use it as a lens for looking at American race relations, which are seldom treated seriously on T.V. Because I am a big geek girl, in the autograph line I asked him what he thought of the Polanski Macbeth, and he said it and the Olivier version are probably the best, but that he thinks they still made Macbeth too passive.

--He claimed ignorance about what is happening with Spike on AtS, but he did say that he thinks Spike will come back angry and still immature, and that he and Angel will not be getting along. He seemed excited by the prospect of this.

--He said his favorite BtVS season is Season Seven. He explained that inevitably the last season of BtVS would be his favorite, since he's always most interested in the latest progression of his character, or something to that effect. He seems very happy to have been able to finish out Spike's arc on BtVS like he did, calling it a true hero's journey.

--He is indeed doing Venetian Heat in September. Joss is giving him time off to do it, since it's such a great role and a chance to work with Derek Jacobi and Sean Bean. James explained that normally he doesn't like to take time off from his television schedule to do movies, since that's a good way to make the writers think you're not reliable and get sidelined. But he just couldn't turn this down. He mentioned that the only other time he's ever asked for time off from BtVS was at the very end of Season Six, when he was up for the role of Picard's clone in Star Trek: Nemesis. That's why Spike got his soul back in Africa instead of Sunnydale. Again, in that situation Joss agreed that the part was so good it was work taking time away for, but then ironically, JM lost out on the job.

--He's going to be filming many of his scenes for AtS in advance, so Spike shouldn't be losing much screentime. He starts filming Season Five on July 28th. JM said he took the part in the film not just because of the stars and the director (who's a theater person doing film for the first time), but also because he was drawn to the film's subject matter. As many of you probably know, he's playing a gay man living in 1930s Italy, who is trapped in a loveless marriage but ends up falling in love with another man by story's end. Since this is during a time when gays were often hanged by the fascists, he risks everything to be who he is. James said that's something that's become very important to him, too. This is my own speculation, but perhaps this explains why he's suddenly being so forthcoming about his personal life?

ETA:--It sounds like Spike's look is going to be mostly unchanged on AtS next year. James mentioned having to bleach his hair again in a few days, and that even with Sweet 'n Low in the dye, it was still quite painful. A female fan suggested he rinse his hair in whole milk, since milk is a base and that will balance out the acids in the dye. James seemed very interested in her advice. He also repeated the story about the prop guys telling him to steal his coat when BtVS ended. He told us he wouldn't because Fox was going to auction the coat off for so much money on the internet, and he didn't think stealing $250,000 dollars from his bosses would go over well. What's really interesting, though, was his next statement: apparently, WB freaked out after they found out 20th Century Fox sold the coat, because they wanted it for this season of AtS. The WB wardobe department is currently building him another coat just like the old one, but one of the wardrobe people told him they could only find one picture of it anywhere. The audience made incredulous noises, and James shook his head exasperatedly and gave an "I know, they're idiots, but what are you gonna do?" shrug. He said he basically told the person "Um, maybe you should try looking for about two more minutes, and see what happens."

So. . .platinum-blond-black-leather-coated Spike next season on AtS. Things are definitely lookin' up.
